UptimeRobot – Real time web monitoring!

UptimeRobot

We’d like to write a piece about this great little web monitoring site that we came across and have used to monitor out sites for some time now.

Accessible at UptimeRobot.com, the site allows you to monitor up to 50 sites, every 5 minutes, for free!

The GUI is lovely, the notifications – SMS, Twitter, email, web hooks or PUSH – are perfect and theĀ  number of monitors you can include for a particular site are just right. UR will allow you to monitor HTTP/S, Ping, Port and keywords too. You are able to view uptime, downtime, and response times as well as average downtime across a period of time.

And for those that really want to delve in, an API is also available for developers to use to integrate the service into their own apps.

Check it out, we think you’ll love it!

New MySpace comes at a time when social networks are becoming bloated

MySpace LogoType

Have you checked out the all new MySpace? If you haven’t already then you really should take a look.

In June 2011, Specific Media Group and Justin Timberlake jointly purchased the company taking it over from News Corp.

Since the takeover the whole site and platform has been rebuilt and redesigned, and for music discovery and networking (in that sense) it is the best out there and blows Facebook out of the water.

What’s better is that the help and support platform is actively managed and you do get a response to any queries.

My recommendation – check this out!

ProTip: Remove malware with ComboFix

ComboFix Icon
ComboFix Icon

ComboFix is a pretty nifty bit of of software provided by the guys over at BleepingComputer (we love the name!).

Described by them as ‘a program that scans your computer for known malware, and when found, attempts to clean these infections automatically. In addition to being able to remove a large amount of the most common and current malware‘.

Note: this is more an informative post than to guide the average user. It makes non-reversible changes to the computer by removing data from the foll0wing locations automatically:

  • Windows Recycle Bin
  • Temporary Internet Files
  • Temp Folder

Anyone in the IT field may like to take a look at the software and include it in their ‘toolkit’.

If you have any queries let me know.

Free Antivirus For Mac

Avast! for Mac

You would be pretty naive to think that Apple Macs are bullet proof now. With their increasing popularity (which I love) they are becoming a bigger target for people to attack.

Therefore we recommend that you install some software (no need to pay) that will help keep you Mac protected…

With each new install of the Operating System Apple have been locking the system down and improving the security but it’s worthwhile loading some extra software so you don’t get caught out.

Sophos for Mac has been around for a while and generally works very well…. but another one you could try is Avast! Free Antivirus for Mac – see review here: https://uk.pcmag.com/antivirus/35311/avast-security-for-machttp://www.macworld.co.uk/macsoftware/reviews/?reviewid=3367786

Stay safe and happy computing!
